Description

Reel Asian, the largest pan-Asian film festival in Canada, highlights contemporary Asian cinema and works from the global Asian diaspora, featuring films and videos by Asian-identifying artists from Canada, the U.S., Asia, and beyond.

The festival serves as a vital platform for Asian media artists, fostering greater appreciation for Asian cinema within Canada.

Screening

  • Opening Night Gala Presentation: CAN I GET A WITNESS?
    Canada | 2024 | 110 min | English | Directed by Women | Drama

Set in a near-future world where humans must die by age 50 to address global crises, teenage Kiah (Keira Jang) embarks on her first day as a Documenter in Powell River, B.C. Under the guidance of experienced convener Daniel (Joel Oulette), she navigates a peaceful world while Ellie (Sandra Oh) faces the emotional challenges of her daughter’s transition into adulthood. Directed by Ann Marie Fleming, this thought-provoking film examines sacrifice and the complex interplay between the world’s beauty and its struggles.

  • Wee Asian

Loud and expressive, reflexive yet playful, this programme, in the spirit of Creatura, makes room for all our mushy and monstruous emotions. Come for the screening, stick around for the delightful arts activities for all ages to enjoy together!

For: family gatherings; those seeking a relaxed screening; reruns; hands-on

  • RA: X

Breaks away from traditional programming norms, merging technology and creativity to captivate, educate, and entertain. RA stands for Reel Asian, with X as the variable.

Creatura is a multimedia stream of programming that draws inspiration from the strange, wild, and untamed: descriptions historically used to label, discipline and exclude people. Whether it be for unrecognizable ways of being, or unacceptable actions and behaviours, to be a creature is to exist at the edge of what it means to be human. Creatura programming aims to engage with all variations of this label across the spectrum, from the mystical and uncanny to the unruly and abhuman.

Alongside our featured installation and VR project, catch other Creatura-inspired events in our Reel Ideas program and at Wee Asian!

  • Shorts Presentation: UNSUNG VOICES 13

Six emerging filmmakers embarked on a summer-long filmmaking journey. We’re proud to present their world premiere here, in the 13th edition of Reel Asian’s filmmaking program.
