Description

Get ready for a day of hands-on fun at The Amazing Brentwood's first annual Holiday Hackathon—a unique opportunity to help adapt toys for kids with disabilities! As part of the 2024 Hacking for the Holidays campaign, on Friday, November 22nd, volunteers will work to adapt 250 toys to donate to children across Canada.

No prior experience with tools or electronics is required, as each volunteer will receive step-by-step guidance. Volunteers of all backgrounds are welcome, with two-hour shifts available throughout the day to modify toys and create custom switches.

Why This Matters

Every child deserves the joy of play, but for kids with disabilities, traditional toys can be hard to use independently, and adapted toys often cost over $300. By adapting these toys, volunteers can make play accessible and affordable.

This Holiday Hackathon is part of a nationwide initiative, Hacking for the Holidays, which runs from September to December. Across 80 events in 10 provinces, community members, students, and corporate partners will come together to help adapt and donate 2,000 toys and switches to children and clinicians throughout Canada.

What to Expect on Event Day

Volunteers sign up for a two-hour time slot, starting with a 20-minute overview and safety briefing. Following that, each participant will spend 90 minutes at build tables, working hands-on to adapt a toy and build a switch.

Frequent Questions

What Are Switch Adapted Toys?
Switch Adapted Toys are regular battery-powered toys that have been modified with a 3.5mm headphone jack, allowing the toy to be activated by an Assistive Switch. Many toys have buttons and switches that are not accessible for all kids, so these adaptations enable all children to play and enjoy them.
Why Are Switch Adapted Toys Important?
While Switch Adapted Toys are available for purchase, they are often expensive and come in limited varieties. Making these toys accessible helps kids with disabilities engage in fun, educational play and eases the financial burden on families.
Do I Need to Bring Anything?
No, everything you need—tools, materials, and instructions—will be provided on-site.
Can Kids Participate?
Yes, with a few guidelines. All minors must be accompanied by an adult at the event. We recommend participants be at least 11 years old, as the activity involves handling small parts and using hot soldering irons.
Do I Need Experience with Tools or Electronics?
No experience is required! The team will guide you through each step, including safety instructions, so you can safely enjoy building adapted toys for kids.
Can I Sign Up for Multiple Shifts?
Yes, if you’d like to keep building, feel free to choose consecutive time slots. After your first shift, you can skip the introductory presentation and jump right into the next session.
Where Will the Event Take Place?
The setup will be right outside the TABLES food court on the second floor. Look for the Check-In table near the food court hallway.
What Amenities Are Available at the Location?
The Amazing Brentwood offers paid parking and is close to restrooms. You’ll also find a variety of dining options in the TABLES food court nearby.
