Holiday Hackathon 2024Makers Making Change

Description
Get ready for a day of hands-on fun at The Amazing Brentwood's first annual Holiday Hackathon—a unique opportunity to help adapt toys for kids with disabilities! As part of the 2024 Hacking for the Holidays campaign, on Friday, November 22nd, volunteers will work to adapt 250 toys to donate to children across Canada.
No prior experience with tools or electronics is required, as each volunteer will receive step-by-step guidance. Volunteers of all backgrounds are welcome, with two-hour shifts available throughout the day to modify toys and create custom switches.
Why This Matters
Every child deserves the joy of play, but for kids with disabilities, traditional toys can be hard to use independently, and adapted toys often cost over $300. By adapting these toys, volunteers can make play accessible and affordable.
This Holiday Hackathon is part of a nationwide initiative, Hacking for the Holidays, which runs from September to December. Across 80 events in 10 provinces, community members, students, and corporate partners will come together to help adapt and donate 2,000 toys and switches to children and clinicians throughout Canada.
What to Expect on Event Day
Volunteers sign up for a two-hour time slot, starting with a 20-minute overview and safety briefing. Following that, each participant will spend 90 minutes at build tables, working hands-on to adapt a toy and build a switch.
