Description
Bird enthusiasts have a wonderful opportunity to explore Saskatoon’s rich avian life through the Saskatoon Winter Birdwatching Tour. This tour, designed to cater to both novice and experienced bird watchers, promises an immersive experience in the city's most bird-rich parks.
About the Tour
Led by local birding expert Stan Shadick, the Saskatoon Winter Birdwatching Tour is a walking and driving journey through some of the best birdwatching spots in the city. Participants will have the chance to see winter visitors such as Bohemian Waxwings, crossbills, chickadees, Red-breasted Nuthatch, White-breasted Nuthatch, woodpeckers, and Common Goldeneye. The tour also includes visits to popular hangouts for ducks and geese.
Birdwatching Locations
The tour primarily takes place in Saskatoon's city parks, including the Forestry Farm Park. These locations are carefully selected for their high bird activity, providing a perfect environment to spot a variety of species. Stan Shadick brings a spotting scope, ensuring that participants can view the birds up close, particularly the ducks and geese on the river.
Tour Structure
Private tours are available daily from November to March, with both morning and afternoon options. These tours are tailored to the interests of the participants, ensuring a personalized experience. For those seeking a more budget-friendly option, special group budget tours are offered on specific dates.
Participants should be prepared to dress warmly, as the tours take place in winter conditions. Warm clothing, including a winter hat, coat, pants, long underwear, and snow boots, is recommended. The pace of the tour is relatively slow, allowing ample time to observe and enjoy the birdlife.
Additional Activities
Participants of the private tours have the option to extend their birdwatching experience with visits to the Saskatoon Zoo and the Museum of Natural Sciences. The zoo features prairie wild birds and mammals, while the museum offers exhibits with live fish, birds, plants, and displays about dinosaurs, fossils, and minerals.
