Starting on the Right Track
For those new to skiing or looking to improve their technique, Canoe Ski Club offers a range of courses taught on the ski training tracks at the Gordie Howe Complex and Holiday Park Golf Course. The courses span approximately six hours over three sessions, focusing primarily on practical instruction, with some theory to support learning. Beginners will find the foundational courses particularly beneficial, helping them to develop essential skills and confidence on the snow.
Classic & Skate Ski Courses
Beginner and intermediate classic and skate ski courses are available, offering instruction in various techniques. Beginners will learn the basics of diagonal stride, balance, weight shift, and double poling, while intermediate skiers can refine these techniques for more efficient skiing. These courses are designed to help skiers move faster with less effort, enhancing their overall enjoyment of the sport.
Ski Plus Courses
For those interested in exploring beyond the city limits, Ski Plus courses include an instructional day trip to Eb’s Ski Trails in the Nisbet Forest. This offers a unique opportunity to apply skills learned on the training track to a more challenging wilderness trail system.
Classic Ski Lessons
This foundational course is perfect for beginners or those who have never had formal instruction. It covers classic techniques such as diagonal stride, turning, and uphill and downhill techniques. Each course consists of three sessions, ensuring comprehensive coverage of essential skills.
- Intermediate Classic Technique: This course is designed for skiers who have completed a Learn to Ski course or are self-taught but familiar with basic techniques. It focuses on refining these skills for more efficient and enjoyable skiing.
- Learn to Skate Ski Course: For those interested in the skating motion on skis, this course covers basic techniques like free skate, 1-skate, 2-skate, and off-set. The classic cross-country skiing course is recommended as a precursor to this course, as many principles carry over.
- Learn to Ski Plus Course: This comprehensive 12-hour course starts with sessions on the training track and culminates in a day tour to Eb’s Ski Trails. It provides a thorough introduction to cross-country skiing, with plenty of opportunities to practice new skills in a real-world setting.
Private Instruction
For those with busy schedules or specific areas of difficulty, private or semi-private lessons are available. These personalized sessions provide targeted instruction to help skiers improve their skills effectively.
