Description

Ice Skating at Bowness Park is an iconic winter activity in Calgary, offering a unique and picturesque experience. Nestled along the Bow River, this park transforms into a winter wonderland from mid-November to mid-March, with a beautiful lagoon and a 1.6 km skating track that winds through the park's scenic landscape.

The Lagoon Experience

Bowness Park features an expansive lagoon dedicated to outdoor skating. The lagoon, located in the eastern part of the park, provides ample space for skaters of all ages and skill levels to enjoy. Whether gliding gracefully on figure skates or practicing quick turns with hockey skates, the ice surface is well-maintained and inviting. Skating hours are from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, allowing plenty of time for visitors to take in the crisp winter air and stunning views.

The Skating Track

For those looking to explore more, Bowness Park offers a 1.6 km skating track that runs alongside the Bow River. This trail provides a serene and beautiful setting, surrounded by trees and the tranquil river. Skating along this path is a must-do experience, offering a unique perspective of the park. However, note that skaters will need to remove their skates and walk to access the trail, as there are no direct connections from the lagoon.

Warm-Up Spots and Facilities

Skaters can take breaks at various warm-up spots around the lagoon, including benches and fire pits. These areas provide a cozy place to relax and warm up before heading back out onto the ice. The park's facilities include the Tea House, which serves sandwiches, cupcakes, coffee, and hot chocolate, perfect for a mid-skate snack. There is also the Seasons of Bowness Park restaurant offering dine-in or take-out options.

Safety and Equipment

Safety is a priority at Bowness Park. Helmets are strongly encouraged for all skaters, and the park provides rubber mats around the lagoon to make walking in skates easy and safe. While hockey sticks, nets, toboggans, and sleds are not permitted on the ice, skaters can use skating aids to help beginners get comfortable on the ice.

Additional Activities

Beyond ice skating, Bowness Park offers a range of winter activities. There are fire pits and BBQs for those looking to have a picnic, a shinny ice rink, and even a curling rink. The park also introduced Crokicurl, a new outdoor game combining crokinole and curling, adding another fun element to the winter experience.
