The Casa Art Studio offers to artists the opportunity to go beyond the classroom and dive deep into their artistic expression. This art-hub provides access to six different art studios, including clay, woodworking, 2D art, darkroom, printmaking, and textiles. Artists will find state-of-the-art equipment and a vibrant community of like-minded individuals who share their passion for creativity.
A Hub of Artistic Exploration
Casa stands out as a unique, cross-disciplinary facility in North America. Its studio spaces cater to a wide range of artistic pursuits, including textiles, printmaking, photography, woodworking, sculpture, pottery, and 2D media. With the flexibility to create seven days a week, artists can move their practice beyond the confines of their home and fully explore their artistic potential.
Clay Studio Hub Activities
- Wheel Throwing and Handbuilding: Artists can hone their skills in the Clay Studio, designed for both handbuilding and wheel throwing. The studio features large canvas tables, six clay wheels, and easy access to sinks, reclamation bats, and storage carts. With an inventory of various clay types for sale, a glazing studio, and on-site kilns, artists can take their work from concept to completion.
- Textile Studio: Sewing, Dyeing, Felting, and Silk Painting: The Textile Studio offers separate dry and wet areas. The dry area is equipped with large workbenches, sewing machines, and sergers, while the wet area features stainless-steel counters, deep basin sinks, induction burners, and a dye fridge. With specialized ventilation and a range of tools, artists can pursue various fabric-based practices in a well-equipped environment.
- Woodworking Studio: Sculpting, Building, and Assemblage: The Woodworking Studio, provides ample space for creating three-dimensional sculptures, installation pieces, and other wooden projects. With 18-foot ceilings and access to the 3D Courtyard for larger projects, artists can work with 8-foot materials and utilize natural ventilation. The studio is equipped with workbenches, hand tools, basic power tools, and an extensive ventilation system, ensuring a safe and productive workspace.
- 2D Studio: Drawing, Painting, and Collage: The 2D Studio offers a spacious and well-lit environment for artists working in various media. With natural north light throughout the day, the studio provides an ideal setting for drawing, painting, and collage. Artists can bring their supplies, select a table or easel, and create larger works in a distraction-free atmosphere.
- Printmaking Studio: Relief Printing, Intaglio, Silkscreen, and Etching: Adjacent to the 2D Studio, the Printmaking Studio supports a wide range of printmaking processes. With dedicated inking stations, paper sinks, and safety equipment such as a ventilation hood and eyewash station, artists can safely produce clean multiples.
- Darkroom- Processing and Developing: Casa's newest addition, the Darkroom, shares space with the Textile Studio Dye Room and offers a fully dark environment with a red safelight. Artists can explore the analog process by turning negatives into enlargements and developing black and white film. With a chemical fridge, enlarger, film changing bag, developer tank, and pay-per-use development chemicals, the Darkroom provides everything needed for film photography.
Commitment to Safety and Security
Casa prioritizes safety and security with staff assistance available during regular hours, first aid certified staff, regular monitoring of common areas and washrooms, and a strict policy against inappropriate behavior. Studio access requires demonstrated proficiency and orientation, with traceable key fobs for building and studio access.
