Miniature Railway RidesBurnaby Central Railway
Description
Experience the joy of Miniature Railway Rides at Burnaby Central Railway, a unique 1/8 scale ride-on railway built and operated by the dedicated volunteers of the BC Society of Model Engineers. Located in Confederation Park, this charming attraction offers family fun for all ages.
Train Rides Family Fun for All Ages
Burnaby Central Railway is open to the public for rides from 11am to 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays from Easter to Canadian Thanksgiving. The trains pull multiple cars, each carrying 20 or more passengers on a delightful 2-mile outdoor ride through the woods, complete with bridges, tunnels, crossovers, and spirals. Each ride takes approximately 10 minutes, offering a unique and enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages.
The locomotives at Burnaby Central Railway are hand-built from detailed drawings, patterns, and castings, then machined, welded, and fabricated into finished engines. The steam engines, true 1/8th scale miniatures, are mostly fired on propane. The society also operates battery-electric and diesel locomotives, ensuring a variety of engines are always ready for service. On special occasions, visiting locomotives from other miniature railways across North America make appearances, adding to the excitement.
Outdoor Public Area and Birthday Parties
The grassy picnic area is perfect for a relaxing break, though picnic tables under the canopies are reserved for pre-booked birthday parties. Birthday party bookings include two sittings each day: 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM and 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM, accommodating up to 50 people and including 20 ride tokens.
Track Specifications
The railway boasts over 2 miles of 7.5" gauge track, featuring a mainline minimum curvature of a 60-foot radius and a maximum upgrade of 2%. Riders will enjoy the thrill of passing through two tunnels, crossing two bridges, and traversing two viaducts, adding to the excitement and authenticity of the miniature railway experience.
