Description
The International Buddhist Temple is a renowned spiritual and cultural hub located in Richmond. Operated by the International Buddhist Society, the temple practices Mahayana Buddhism while welcoming affiliates and visitors from the Theravada tradition and diverse cultural and religious backgrounds.
A Work of Art
Widely considered the finest example of traditional Chinese architecture in Canada, the International Buddhist Temple is reminiscent of the grandeur of the Forbidden City in Beijing. The temple complex features intricate stonework, symbolic carvings, and serene natural elements, creating a tranquil environment akin to a scholar’s courtyard in ancient China.
Inside, visitors can admire exquisite Chinese artistry in the form of paintings, calligraphy, sculpture, and carpentry. The majestic Buddha statues, beautiful shrines, and stunning ceramic murals offer a deep connection to traditional Chinese art and culture.
Guided Tours
To enhance visitors' experience, the temple offers guided tours for groups of 15 or more. These tours provide insight into the temple’s architecture, art, culture, and Buddhist philosophy. Tours are available any day of the week between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, with prior written notice required. Each tour lasts approximately 60 minutes and is led by knowledgeable staff or volunteers.
Religious Services
The International Buddhist Society provides a range of services to both local and international communities. Regular religious ceremonies, Dharma talks, and meditation retreats are open to all who wish to participate. The temple also features a classical Chinese garden and an impressive collection of Chinese paintings, calligraphy, and sculptures. Educational services, including classes and Dharma talks led by the Venerable Guan Cheng, are available both in person and online. The temple’s charitable programs also encourage community involvement and volunteerism.
Educational Opportunities
The Venerable Guan Cheng, the temple’s Abbot, offers numerous Dharma talks on Buddhist philosophy, meditation, and Mahayana scriptures. These talks are available in both English and Chinese, with English sessions held every Saturday morning. Chinese Dharma talks occur several times throughout the year. Recordings of these talks can be accessed online, providing valuable resources for those wishing to deepen their understanding of Buddhism.
