Interpretive Centre
The Interpretive Centre at Fort Normandeau brings the story of the Red Deer Crossing to life with dramatic programs, artifacts, and engaging indoor and outdoor exhibits. The theatre features a captivating 12-minute audio-visual program. Throughout the summer, visitors can enjoy authentic, entertaining, and informative live programs that celebrate Red Deer's founding cultures. Activities include making bannock or homemade ice cream, dancing to First Nations or Metis music, and participating in traditional garden harvests.
Schools and youth groups can book the site for guided programs or even overnight campouts in the teepees. Summer day camps and teepee sleepovers provide youngsters with an in-depth exposure to their heritage.
Stopping House
The Stopping House features new exhibits and a reconstruction of the original Fort at the Red Deer Crossing, bringing early Red Deer history to life. Programs, exhibits, and seasonal special events offer a glimpse into the past. A heritage garden, poultry yard, and teepees are available for public enjoyment.
Fort Normandeau, located west of Red Deer on the banks of the Red Deer River, sits at the site of the original Red Deer Crossing community. The staff at the Interpretive Centre tell the stories of Red Deer’s three founding cultures: the Cree and Blackfoot people, the Metis Buffalo Hunters, and the early European settlers through various programs and activities.
Grounds & Boat Launch
The grounds of Fort Normandeau provide a picturesque setting for a picnic lunch or a relaxing day by the Red Deer River. Multiple picnic tables and fire pits are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The site also features a scenic boat launch for canoeing or paddling down the river.
