Description

Fort York National Historic Site invites visitors to step into a 43-acre archeological park where history comes alive. This remarkable site is where British soldiers, First Nations warriors, and Upper Canadian militiamen united to defend Toronto from capture during the War of 1812. The Battle of York was a pivotal moment, and at Fort York, you can relive these dramatic events through an immersive multimedia experience.

Visitors will be captivated by the personal stories of unsung heroes who played critical roles in defending the city. By highlighting narratives from Indigenous communities and other historically deserving groups, Fort York provides a comprehensive understanding of their contributions during this conflict. Located amidst the bustling skyscrapers of downtown Toronto, Fort York offers a unique perspective on how the city has evolved from its early days to the present.

Explore Fort York Visitor Centre

The Visitor Centre at Fort York is a treasure trove of history, featuring a 2,900 square foot Exhibit Gallery where visitors can delve deeper into the steps leading up to the Battle of York. The gallery includes an 'immersive experience' exhibit that chronicles the events leading to the explosion of the fort’s Grand Magazine. Another highlight is the 480 square foot vault or treasury, which is designed to display iconic and light-sensitive artifacts.

The Orientation Theatre further enhances the visitor experience by providing an engaging introduction to the site and its historical significance.

Fort York's commitment to inclusion means that Indigenous stories and the experiences of historically deserving communities are integral to the narrative, providing a richer understanding of the past.
